The Schönburg palace was built in 1787 for the later Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse, who used it as a summer residence. The castle was originally called Montcherie, but was renamed Schönburg a few years later to commemorate the Schöneburg, which served to protect Hofgeismar for a long time when it was still owned by Mainz. The castle was designed by Simon Louis du Ry, the Hessian chief architect with Huguenot roots, who was also responsible for Wilhelmsthal Castle. The castle has been used by the Evangelical Academy for seminars since 1952.
