When the mill was built in Sittensen has not been clarified to this day. It is known that the Horneburg Burgmann Dietrich Schulte came into their possession in 1600 through a barter with the Verden bishop Philipp Sigismund.
Originally, the grinder was driven by two water wheels. However, after a massive enlargement of the building in 1908, the two water wheels were replaced by turbines.
In 1984, the mill was sold to the municipality of Sittensen, which carried out a comprehensive restoration of the mill in the following years, reactivating the use of water power with an undershot water wheel.
Today, a crafts museum has been set up in the old mill, which shows, among other things, the traditional grinding technology of the water mill. The tourist office of the joint municipality of Sittensen is also housed in the building.
