Within the city wall, on the Rems side, the battlement from the second half of the 13th century leads from the Chapel Gate at the Bürgermühle, past the Apothekergarten and Bädertörle, to the Beinsteiner Torturm. Loopholes are a reminder of the original defensive purpose.

It was only during the later expansion of the city, when the city fortifications had largely lost their military function, that the city wall was built over with buildings. In the 19th century, tanners' workshops were built in front of the wall on the mill canal, parts of which are still preserved today.
