The Aachen Gate was built at the beginning of the 14th century in connection with Bergheim's becoming a town and its fortifications. It protected the long-distance trade route between Cologne and Aachen.
With its central, two-storey rectangular building and three-quarter round towers on the outside corners, the Aachen Gate is one of the mightiest city gates in the Rhineland.
