The De Lerma were a very powerful family from Spain, originally from “Lerma”, a city close to Burgos, former capital of the Kingdom of Castile, which reached Bitonto in 1565 where it was registered among the nobles outside the square. They occupied numerous important positions in both civil and ecclesiastical life with the archpriest Don Girolamo De Lerma (1647). In the same period in which the palace was built, a tower was built outside the city: “Torre de Lerma”, which was transformed into a vast farm.
