The beautiful Castle Expoel from the 13th century owes its name to Jan de Axpole, the husband of the first known owner, Catharina Raduwaerts. Others argue that the castle may have got its name from an evil spirit or witch who lived here in a pool. Since 1700, the castle has been the summer residence of Balthazar IV Moretus, heir to the Plantin printing and publishing house in Antwerp and grand chaplain of Antwerp. After his death, the castle was sold to the de Meester de Ravestein family.
