At Plombières, line 38 joins the old line 39 coming from Montzen via Moresnet (with a branch to La Calamine under the Moresnet viaduct).

It crosses the Plombières mine site, where it leads from the junction of line 38 towards Gemmenich and at this point joins line 24, which is still in operation, near the site of the three country points from which one can reach Aachen

Line 39 is a former railway line in Belgium, partly closed. It used to connect the Botzelaer tunnel (on the border line to Aachen) to Welkenraedt on line 37 (Infrabel). In 1917, a new connection was made with line 24 (Infrabel) at Montzen (nl) and the Botzelaer tunnel.

The old line between the border and this connection, redundant and more sinuous than line 24, was closed and dismantled in the 1950s. The rest of the line, although used sporadically, is kept in service for the service of Montzen and was electrified. This allows, for example, passenger trains on line 37 to make the detour via Visé and Montzen if all or part of the Chênée – Dolhain-Gileppe section becomes temporarily unusable, as was the case due to flooding from July to October. 2021.
