    It takes its name from the oral testimony according to which the apostle Peter, fleeing the city to avoid martyrdom, meets Jesus to whom he addresses the following words "Domine, quo vadis? (Lord, where are you going)? " and the Lord replied "Venio Romam iterum crucifigi (I come to Rome to be crucified again)". Peter, understanding the reproach, goes back to face his fate and Jesus disappears but, as he disappears, he leaves his footprints on the road.

    As a testimony of what happened, inside the Church there is a stone with the footprints "of his holy feet", those left by Jesus on the place where the Church now stands. The stone is actually a copy: the original is in fact kept in the Basilica of San Sebastiano.
