    Academy Theater, Vienna
The History of the Academy Theater in Vienna
The Academy Theater was built by the architects Fellner and Hellmer and Ludwig Baumann between 1911 and 1913 and has been the second venue of the Burgtheater since 1922. After many years of intervention by the Burgtheater actors, who wanted a second, more intimate venue, Max Paulsen succeeded in affiliating the theater of the Academy for Music and Performing Arts, known as the Academy Theater for short, to the Burgtheater as a chamber play stage.

The opening took place on September 8, 1922 with Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris". After the Second World War, which the building survived undamaged, it was reopened on May 19, 1945 under Raoul Aslan with Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler". In 1974 and 1999 the Academy Theater was rebuilt and technically modernised.

It was built from 1911 to 1913 by the architects Ludwig Baumann, Fellner and Helmer as a practice stage for the Academy for Music and Performing Arts at Lisztstrasse 1 (3rd district, Landstrasse). The building of the theater and the academy was erected by the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft, handed over to the state after completion and opened on February 4, 1914 with Giuseppe Verdi's A Masked Ball. It has been used by the Burgtheater as a chamber theater since 1922. It has 500 seats, 32 standing places and 4 wheelchair places. The auditorium was changed in 1939 and 1975. The Akademietheater mainly plays contemporary pieces, which makes the theater particularly attractive for younger audiences than the Burgtheater. In particular, works by Roland Schimmelpfennig, who is currently the most played contemporary dramatist in Germany, are performed here, sometimes as premieres, which illustrates the importance of this stage for the German-speaking area.
