Café Ritter has been around since 1867 and has been at this location on Mariahilfer Strasse for almost as long. So if you are looking for a bit of rest between the “coffee-to-go” and fashion overload on a long shopping Saturday, you can soak up the Viennese coffee house culture in Café Ritter. There are waiters in suits, cakes in the showcase and coffee variations that you would not identify as such without a description of the name. Traditional dishes are on the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the ambience is truly Viennese.

This house, set back from the street, was built in 1887 together with the two neighboring houses by Oskar Merz. The furnishings of the Café Ritter on the ground floor date from the early 20th century and have largely been preserved.

The Altwiener restaurant in the 6th district is considered one of the most traditional in the Viennese coffee house scene.
The Café Ritter was first opened in 1867 in the former summer palace of Prince Esterhazy in Mariahilf. Around 20 years later, the company moved to its current location, on the corner of Schadekgasse/Amerlingstrasse. [caferitter.at]
