"Here the farmers came in earlier and had to pay their tithes, that is, pay taxes," says 74-year-old Tobias Schmid from Berneck. With his big hands he strokes the wood of the gate that closes the cellar of today's ducal house from the outside. He bought the house to preserve a piece of history. The house was built in 1729 and was inhabited by an old peasant couple until a few years ago. Today it is empty and is used by the master winemaker as a warehouse and for special occasions. "I would love to restore it and bring it up to scratch, but the costs would be immense," says Schmid. He was able to save a lot. Among other things, the old schnapps distillery and the old fruit factory.
