The Diakonievene is a nature reserve near Nijeberkoop that was previously used for the excavation of peat. This was done by the church poor relief of Nijeberkoop to keep the local population warm in the winter. What is left of the peat painting? A number of beautifully situated lakes that are connected to each other, the remains of a pingo ruin with a wooded drift bank and small pieces of heathland.
