Also referred to as Arthur’s Chair, Stone Arthur is a rocky tor, clearly visible to the northeast of Grasmere village. Technically an outcrop on Great Rigg’s southwestern arm, it was, nonetheless, granted Wainwright status by the legendary hill walker, so its craggy top sees plenty of visitors.
Stone Arthur is an outlier of the main Fairfield Horseshoe but it can be incorporated into an alternative loop, starting from the A591 and taking in Great Rigg, Fairfield and Seat Sandal via Grisedale Tarn, an excellent adventure. Grasmere and Rydal have a range of accommodation options near to most starting points.
The exact summit can be difficult to pick out among the outcrops but the scenery more than makes up for that. It’s hemmed in by larger fells to the east, but to the west the views into the mountainous heart of Lakeland are majestic, with Easedale Tarn in the foreground and the Scafells rising imperiously beyond.
With a beautiful view of Grasmere. Better to hike Stone Arthur from the top, the climb from the bottom is a bit difficult. Better take the lateral path and then back.

I added Stone Arthur to the traditional Fairfield Horseshoe by traversing between Heron Pike and Stone Arthur around the 520 m contour line. I filled up on water from the stream between which was very useful.
