The origin of the castle of Rekem must be sought in a Carolingian fortress on this site; in the 14th century this fortress fell into disrepair and was replaced around 1350 by an oval-shaped fortress of great dimensions; this castle is inhabited until 1507 and then falls into disrepair. In 1597 Count Herman d'Aspremont-Lynden built a very spacious moated castle in Maas Renaissance style, of which the still existing building is only a part. In 1792 the building was confiscated by the French, converted into a hospital and used as such until 1795; during this period, the original complex is largely demolished, except for the still existing buildings. In 1809 the castle was used as a beggars' asylum, from 1921 as a psychiatric institution. Thorough restoration in 1857.

The castle d'Aspremont-Lynden in Maasland renaissance, built in 1595 on the site of former castles. The counts of the county of Rekem lived in the castle. In the French era (1795 to 1805) it functioned as a military hospital; between 1809 and 1891 as a beggar's asylum and from 1921 to 1980 it served as a state psychiatric institution. It is now a protected monument. The castle is not accessible to private persons.

Visiting the castle is generally only possible during guided tours in group, in combination with a guided street walk through Oud-Rekem.

There are also regular exhibitions, which are accessible to private individuals.

The castle was built for the noble D'Aspremont-Lynden family, who governed the county of Rekem from here from the 17th century. In Carolingian times, a motte was located on the site where the castle would later be built, the first fortress on a rise in the floodplains of the Meuse from the tenth century. This fortress was replaced around 1350 by an oval-shaped castle. Inhabited until 1507, it then fell into disrepair and in 1597 a water castle was built on behalf of Count Herman d'Aspremont-Lynden. The existing castle is only a remnant of this. A stone has been cemented into one of the facades with Count Herman's heart behind it. Currently the castle has no permanent residents or functions. A small museum about the history of the complex has been set up in the former living area. In 2018 it is used for exhibitions and presentations.
