The Rode monastery was founded in 1147 and soon owned extensive land in the area. In the course of the peasant uprisings and shortly afterwards the Reformation in the 16th century, the monastery was secularized. The estate, now known as Klosterrode, changed hands several times and was often expanded, rebuilt and re-used.
