The Odeonplatz with its ensemble of Theatinerkirche, Feldherrnhalle, Residenz and the wide view over the Ludwigstraße to the north to the TU and the Siegestor is one of the most famous squares in the city. As part of the softening of Munich, plans were drawn up as early as around 1790 for a central square to be built in place of the Schwabinger Tor and to make the driveway from the Residenz to Fürstenweg to Nymphenburg Palace (today Brienner Straße) more attractive. The complex in its present form goes back to the special commitment of King Ludwig I. In 1816, when he was still crown prince, he commissioned Leo von Klenze with the overall planning of Ludwigstrasse, which also included Odeonsplatz. The square is known, among other things, for its annual open-air classical music concerts.
