Due to the protection of water in the wells in the community, the dead were not buried in the local cemetery, but were taken away in a box with an open bottom and buried in the sands of the hillside owned by the church.
After the tragic events, it was renamed "Smutna Góra". In 1831, the inhabitants of Chełm erected a cross at the site of the mass grave - the cemetery.
