From 1639 the glassmaker Michael Wentzel ran a glassworks in Breitenborn. The hut was going well, so that young glassmakers moved in and settled there with families. Glass production peaked between 1680 and 1720 with up to a million drinking glasses annually.

After the Seven Years' War (1763), glass factories were also set up in other regions; the decline of the Breitenborn glassworks could no longer be stopped. In 1771 the glassworks had to close. Many residents from the place emigrated to Pomerania and the south of Russia.
