Reinforced concrete bridge from the year of construction 1969 with LEGO bridge (seen from below) from 10/2011.

The Lego bridge is a concrete girder bridge over Schwesterstrasse in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Wuppertal. The paint applied to the design of Lego blocks by graffiti and street artist Martin Heuwold (artist name MEGX) in 2011 attracted attention in numerous publications at home and abroad and received the German Facade Prize in 2012.

In 2011, Martin Heuwold came up with the idea of redesigning one of the bridges on the Wuppertal Northern Railway, which was closed in 1991. After exploratory talks with the city of Wuppertal and the Wuppertal movement, which had created a bike and footpath along the route of the railway line, the bridge over Schwesterstraße was selected, which connects the two districts of Elberfeld (Ostersbaum residential area) and Barmen (Clausen residential area). Heuwold received the suggestion to paint the bridge in the form of Lego bricks from his wife Ninon Becker. The Danish manufacturer Lego A / S gave its approval for the project in advance. The design was developed using a model made from real Lego bricks.

The painting of the bridge, supervised by the Wuppertal Movement, took 13 days and was completed on September 15, 2011. An area of more than 250 square meters was to be painted. Heuwold was supported by employees of the Wuppertaler Wichernhaus gGmbH employed in the second labor market. The project was financed by the Wuppertal movement and the sponsors akzenta and Klauser shoes. The bridge was inaugurated on October 7, 2011.

Here a bridge with an area of approx. 250 square meters was transformed into Lego bricks in 4 weeks.

Thanks for this successfully completed project go to the sponsors Praktika and Klauser Schuhe, Carsten Gerhardt, Jürgen Reusch, Lutz Essrich and Matthias Kreysing from the Wuppertal Movement e.V. for the construction coordination and support, Lothar Bangert and his team from Wichernhaus for preparing the subsurface and the operation and securing of the pallet truck, the responsible municipal authorities for a smooth processing of the approval process and the guys from evolution-industrialdesign for their friendly support with the planning.
