Michael Gartenschläger was a political prisoner of the GDR and an escape helper. He was shot by a special command of the Ministry of State Security in an attempt to dismantle a self-firing system at the border (1976).

For a lifetime for a 17 year old
When East Berlin was cordoned off by the three western sectors on August 13, 1961, the group was outraged. The rebels torch a barn and paint the slogan “Open the gate” on the walls of houses. What follows is a ghostly show trial. The prosecutor calls for the death penalty for the 17-year-old garden bat, the judges impose life sentences. the SED sheet "New Day" triumphs: "Brandts adder breeding is being eradicated" .......

Second life as an escape helper
In 1971 the GDR “sold” 1,375 political prisoners to the Federal Republic for 92 million Deutschmarks. Michael Gartenschläger is someone who owes freedom to this human trafficking. After ten years behind bars, he travels to Italy, builds up an existence as a petrol station operator and falls in love. Gartenschläger is far from finished with the GDR. At Christmas 1972 he brought the first East German to the West in the trunk. As an escape helper, he is involved in the liberation of 31 people from the "GDR state prison". In Yugoslavia, while exploring escape routes, he ends up in prison himself, but is able to escape - he opens the cell lock with a spoon.
In 1976 Gartenschläger started working on the self-firing systems of the type SM 70. The SED regime had 60,000 of these devices set up, which were triggered by trip wires .........
