First mention of the parish in the second quarter of the 13th century with the visitations of Walter of Marvis, Bishop of Tournai. During the dispute between the bishops of Tournai and Utrecht over a number of churches in the Meetjesland, this parish was definitively placed under the authority of the bishop of Tournai in 1264. Stylistically, the oldest parts of the church, in particular the crossing with eight-sided tower, the transept with stair turret and the core of five bays of the nave, can be situated in this period. They were built in early Flemish Brick Gothic
