Shortly before the liberation, one hundred and eight prisoners were executed at various locations in the eastern and northern parts of the Netherlands. This included resistance fighters who had been imprisoned for some time. The death penalty was accelerated for them, under pressure from the unfavorable war developments for the Germans. It also concerned a number of resistance members who had only recently been arrested. Sixteen of them died on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 April 1945 in the Kruisjesdal near Hoog Soeren; a few days before the liberation of Apeldoorn on April 17.
