With 5.5 hectares of interior space, the Barenburg is a spacious hill fort on a steeply sloping mountain spur of the Osterwald about 350 above sea level. Its origin is believed to be in the pre-Roman Iron Age, an archaeological excavation has not yet taken place. The function of the facility as a refuge for the population is likely to have continued into the Middle Ages, as it belonged to the property of the nearby Wülfinghausen monastery. The Barenburg is a rampart fortress near Eldagsen in Lower Saxony. It is located on a steep mountain spur in the Osterwald forest about 350 m above sea level. It is believed to have been built in the pre-Roman Iron Age. No archaeological excavations have taken place to date. The function of the fortress as a refuge for the population is likely to have continued into the Middle Ages, as it was owned by the nearby Wülfinghausen monastery. The former fortification is located on a wooded mountain spur about 3 km south of Eldagsen and 1 km west of Wülfinghausen monastery. The steep elevation on the eastern edge of the Osterwald forest extends far into the flat land and allows a wide view of the Calenberger Land. The rampart fortress has an internal area of 5.5 hectares, making it one of the larger structures of its kind. The builders skilfully used the existing terrain conditions to build the defensive structure. Rugged rock faces that slope down to the flat land on the northwest side offered natural protection. Steep slopes provide protection to the east. A 280 m long and mighty wall made of stones was built in the south. In conjunction with the remains of a ditch in front of it, it is still several meters high today. In some sections the wall has a rampart.
