The town hall was built in 1477 on the site of a purchased town house on the market square. Just 60 years later it was demolished and rebuilt from 1538 to 1546 in a much larger Renaissance style according to plans by the Dresden architect Bastian Kramer. The town fires in 1616 and 1842 severely damaged the building. After the second town fire, the town hall was rebuilt according to plans by the famous architect Gottfried Semper in the Renaissance style with a finely structured gable and slender clock tower.
