Info from the netLittle was known about the Neolithic ancestors in the past. But one thing seemed certain, they were “raw and uneducated”, so also believed Pastor Oldenburg (1773-1854), who has become known in the local area as one of the most ardent advocates of legal protection for large stone graves. In the 19th century there was apparently little interest in an explanation of the truly remarkable cultural achievements of the Neolithic people. The actual function of the so-called "megalithic tombs" had long been revealed. Nevertheless, the stigmatization of the pre-Christian ancestors was largely retained. The supposedly wild pagans indulged in a jolly round - so it was believed - out of apparently abnormal beliefs, human and animal sacrifices were indulged. The large stone grave near Engelmannsbäke, which is formally reminiscent of a table, seemed to finally confirm those crude sacrificial customs. So one was sure: the reddish lichen on the capstone there was actually traces of blood from the wretched victims. The naming of the large stone grave confirms that these myths lived on in the early 20th century. Because it was only at this point in time that the misleading name "Heidenopfertisch", which is still used today, was born.
