What a beautiful little church in the beautiful little center of Optielt. You see the tower when you descend through the fields from the south and then suddenly it is there. Various layers including iron sandstone (of course), walled with a cemetery, the wall full of useful information boards, nicely at a height and protected. Besides the year of construction, you cannot look at it. The year 1716 is emblazoned in a piece of iron sandstone and above the entrance you can see the year 1734. And you can see everything else on the information boards, especially the one across the street with a handy illustration (see photos). Be sure to pay attention to some of the older graves.

The St Martinus church dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and has united all periods of change since then (see photo)

The Church of Saint Martin is a picturesque single-aisled church, built in different periods and nominated for the Flemish Monument Award. The oldest part is the tower, built in ironstone from the region during the 13th century. A new entrance was added in 1716 and in 1754 it was raised by a brick storey. The short nave was built in 1761 on a medieval ironstone basement. The Gothic transept dates from the end of the 16th century, while the choir was built around 1600.
