The St Matthew Chapel, which commemorates the legend of the foundation of the nearby Schwarzenbroich Monastery, was founded by the Belgian politician Henri de Merode and his wife Nathalie de Croy.
The Belgian Merodes are a branch of the genus whose cradle is not far from here, in the village of Merode.
