Bezüglich der alten „Grönaer“ Peterskirche kam es zu einer für die Bernburger Stadtgeschichte folgenreichen Verwirrung. Der als Autorität geltende Schöpfer des „Codex diplomaticus Anhaltinus“, Otto von Heinemann, ordnete eine Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1228 im 1883 erschienenen Index seiner Urkundensammlung der Bernburger Marienkirche zu. In der Urkunde ging es um einen Streit zwischen dem Kloster Ilsenburg und dem Pfarrer der Bernburger Aegidienkirche über Rechte an einer Kirche in dem heute wüsten Dorf Zernitz. Die Aegidienkirche wurde darin nicht explizit erwähnt. Graf Heinrich I. von Anhalt nannte die Bernburger Kirche nur mit der Formulierung „ecclesia nostre in Berneburg“.
