The construction of the convent is linked to the presence of Francis of Assisi in the area between 1216 and 1222 thanks to the hospitality offered by the counts of Celano in the castle of Gagliano Aterno, who also donated the church of Santa Maria piè di Potano to the saint . The construction of the convent near the church will take place between 1221 and 1261, to start the construction of a larger church in 1267, consecrated in 1288 and subsequently transformed in 1647.
