Elsfleth is one of the oldest places on the Lower Weser. According to documents and chronicles, the name can be traced back to the year 1220. The settlement of Elsfleth - called Elsvlete in ancient times - is probably much older. However, the time of its foundation is unknown and cannot be proven. The fact that one of the first churches is said to have been founded in Elsfleth by Bishop Ansgarius of Bremen around 860 speaks in favor of the early existence of the place. At the time of the Stedingers (12th and 13th centuries), Elsfleth was the ecclesiastical center of Nordstedingen and a meeting place for disputes between the Rüstringen Frisians and the Bremen people. In 1350, Elsfleth came under the rule of the Counts of Oldenburg. In 1504, St. Nicolai Church was built, which was given its current hook shape by an extension in 1690. The first school was built in Elsfleth in 1607.SOURCE:elsfleth.de/die-stadt/stadtgeschichte

There is a lot to see here, such as the Maritime Museum. You can eat very well in the Kogge restaurant.
