The Gorges de la Carança route, starting in Thuès-Entre-Valls, plunges you into a dramatic landscape of grey and ochre cliffs, where the Carança river has carved out a stunning canyon. The trail leads you through dense forests and surprises you with equipped sections, including suspension bridges and metal walkways clinging to the rock, offering dizzying views and a constant sense of adventure. It's a moderate 7.2-kilometer (4.5-mile) hike with 332 meters (1088 feet) of elevation gain, taking approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes to complete, ideal for hikers with good balance and no fear of heights.
To plan your visit, be aware that parking in Thuès-Entre-Valls can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early. If you prefer public transport, the Tren Amarillo will drop you at Thuès-La Carança station, a short distance from the start. It's crucial to wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for exposed sections; this route is not suitable for dogs and is not recommended for people with vertigo.
What truly sets this route apart are its "equipped sections," known as "Le Sentier du Vertige," which include ledges carved into the rock and vertical ladders that elevate you above the torrent. These structures, originally created for a hydroelectric plant, transform a simple hike into an exciting and unique experience in the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Catalanes. It is one of the most remarkable routes in the area for its combination of natural beauty and adventure.
