Tips

  • The massive west tower was added to the building before 1250. It is still completely influenced by the style of Romanesque and has pilasters, arches and arched openings. It slopes significantly west, which is explained by the fact that it rests with its east wall on the pressed by the church warts ground, with its west side, however, on unpaved ground, which was lowered over time

  • This church stands in the middle of Hage on a small hill, a wurt. The inhabitants built it as a village center in the years between 1220 and 1250. Their architectural forms are Romanesque, but archaeological excavations are known that the brick building was not the first church, but that he had two predecessors made of wood.
The first of these two wooden churches was destroyed by fire, the second replaced by today's stone church. The exact age of the mark Hage can not be determined anymore. The first settlers probably settled here around the year 800. After the great flood of 1164, the settlement grew larger, so that at this time certainly the first wooden church was built.

  • The St. Ansgari Church in Hage is one of the oldest churches in East Frisia. Unfortunately, there is no exact information about the time of their construction, it was probably built in the second half of the 13th century. In addition to the Romanesque style of the oldest part is already applied Gothic style.
The oldest part of the church is the nave (around 1220), to which the west tower was added in 1250. The Romanesque brick structure is still clearly visible on the north side. The late Gothic choir was built at the end of the 15th century. grown instead of the original apse.
The church was once dedicated to St. Ansgarius (801-865), the Apostle of the North. As the fourth archbishop of Bremen, he dedicated all his power to the service of the church on his missionary journeys. He bought the Vikings robbed children and educated them in the Christian sense.
Our church has many special features. To list everyone here would be beyond the scope. Outstanding is the magnificent crucifixion altar, which came in 1580 from the monastery to Coldinne in the St. Ansgari Church. The Passion of Jesus is represented in five scenes in very well preserved carving. The inventory includes a Bentheim sandstone baptism (13th century), a triumphal cross (around 1500) and the organ built by D. Lohmann, Emden (1776-83).
