The Cruceiro is a stone-carved crucifix monument that can be found in Galicia at crossroads, in church grounds and cemeteries. It was donated more than 20 years ago as a gift from Galicia to invite the Galician compatriot in Munich to the traditional Oktoberfest and a group of traditional costumes from Galicia to take part in the pageant.
Cruceiros are found in Galicia in places that were already promised to have healing properties in the pagan faith, and in places where witch associations and the so-called 'Santa Compaña' (a procession held by the spirits of the dead and the living) are held that this encountered, brought misfortune and death) suspected. These places were to be Christianized by setting up the Cruceiros.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus.
So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.”
