Augustenborg (German Augustenburg) is a town in the municipality of Sønderborg, Region Syddanmark, Denmark. It is located on the island of Als (German Alsen). On January 1, 2023, the town had a population of 3,160.
Until December 31, 2006, Augustenborg was an independent municipality in what was then Sønderjyllands Amt. Due to a municipal reform, various municipalities in Denmark and the offices were merged into the regions. In 1651, Duke Ernst Günther, who had the title of duke but no fiefdom of his own, bought several estates on Alsen from the Danish king. He had most of them demolished, but on the site of the most beautiful in the village of Stavensböl, Augustenborg Castle was built from 1661 (renovated from 1770 to 1776) and named after Ernst Günther's wife, Auguste von Sonderburg-Glücksburg. From then on, the castle was the headquarters of the ducal family of Augustenborg until 1852. The castle features stucco work by the Italian Michelangelo Taddei. The castle is not open to the public.
