Once a thriving industrial centre, the village of Grosmont in the North York Moors National Park is today popular with hikers, tourists and railway enthusiasts. It's a good base for exploring the national park and has a number of cafes, a great pub and a few accommodation options.
It rose to industrial prominence in the 1800s, after the Whitby to Pickering railway was built. In its heyday, the village's Victorian Ironstone mining operations employed around 500 people and produced thousands of tons of iron.
Following the closure of the railway line in 1963, volunteers rallied and the line was reborn as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 1973. Today the village acts as the heart of this line, storing and maintaining the steam locomotives.
