The pillars in the basalt wall are in what is known as a pile position, i.e. they are arranged in a fan shape. This indicates that there was once a large crater filled with lava, which then cooled in columns perpendicular to the cooling surface. The hard material of the volcanic complex was once surrounded by softer rock that has been eroded over millions of years. This is how the interior of the crater rises up today.

From there it is not far to the observation hut. It's worth it. Great view over Mardorf and Homberg
