The church was built between 1160 and 1180 as a Romanesque cross church on the foundations of a stone chapel, which probably dates back to the Iro-Scottish Mission. The tower was initially no higher than the ridge of the church roof. St. Andrew's Church was first mentioned in a document in 1233. In 1279 the tower was raised for military reasons; it was provided with late Romanesque windows. In 1295 the church was connected to a collegiate monastery, the so-called Andreasstift. Until then, this monastery was based in Neustadt am Rübenberge. The monastery includes 6 canonicates and 9 vicaries and was richly endowed with land. The tasks were in religious life, but also particularly included the charitable area: care for the sick and the elderly. In 1350 the church was expanded to include the Gothic side aisles. A Latin inscription above the north portal testifies to this event. "In the jubilee year of 1350, when the plague was over, the Geisslers passed through and the Jews were killed, this church was expanded."
