The Schwarze Au is dammed here to form the mill pond.
The first mill was the grain mill on the mill pond, just before the Au flows into the Bille. It was first documented in 1350 in a messenger's account of the Hamburg treasury. It served as a compulsory mill for 13 surrounding villages until the introduction of freedom of trade.

In 1650, the brewery at the Auemühle was added to the mill and granted a license to sell alcohol. In 1681, a sawmill was built "not far from the place where the Au flows into the Bille." The mill ceased operations in 1959. The license associated with the mill was used to convert it into an inn.
