The Luther oak was planted on October 31, 1817 to mark the 300th anniversary of the posting of Martin Luther's 95 theses on the Castle Church in Wittenberg: the plateau with the oak became a popular destination for spa guests; people met here and enjoyed the magnificent view of Homburg. These long-distance views were possible because large areas of the Taunus slopes near settlements were not forested in the 19th century, a result of centuries of overexploitation of the forests. The Luther oak is now protected as a natural monument because of its cultural and historical significance.
