Tips

  • Bremer Schweiz (AGBS)

The small pond at the bend in the path is the habitat for many small animal and plant species as well as spawning waters for frogs, toads and newts. Small open water areas are becoming increasingly rare. When the floodplain was still meandering, i.e. its bed kept shifting, new habitats for aquatic animals and plants were constantly being created. Man has gradually regulated the streams and thereby destroyed valuable habitats. So today new wetlands must be created for frogs, toads, newts and dragonflies. The former fish pond suffers here in the northern area of the forest from the heavy influx of leaves and too little sunlight. In 2007 the pond was desludged and deepened on behalf of AGBS in order to preserve it.On the left of the path, fungus infestation caused the shoot buds in the bark of an oak to sprout. The parallel lime tree avenue leads from the former courtyard at Brands Mühle to the Auewiesen.
The mill, a proud gallery Dutchman, was shut down in 1924 due to unprofitability. In 1934 the mill head was removed and a year later the upper part of the mill burned down due to lightning.
The pines to the right of the path are unfamiliar and more at home on sandy soil. The spruce stand to the left of the path shows the desolation of a monoculture that arises when forests were planted from one species of tree from an economic point of view. There is a lack of diversity of different species, habitats and food supplies. They are completely impoverished biotopes that are not sufficient for more demanding animal species, which is why fire salamanders, for example, cannot live here. These are dependent on rotten wood, which is not found in our often "tidy" forests. A positive counterexample is the forest on the other side of the path, which could develop naturally.
