The boat "Turisten" drove between Haderslev and a restaurant. The boat had engine problems at Haderslev Dam. The boat's captain made an emergency solution with cut rubber hoses out of a can of gasoline; but these came off and the gasoline sprayed on the hot engine, causing a violent explosion. The fire spread quickly and suddenly the boat was on fire and the passengers panic. The boatswain tried to steer the boat into shallow water; But many of the passengers jumped overboard whether they could swim or not.
