The boat "Turisten" drove between Haderslev and a restaurant. The boat had engine problems at Haderslev Dam. The boat's captain made an emergency solution with cut rubber hoses out of a can of gasoline; but these came off and the gasoline sprayed on the hot engine, causing a violent explosion. The fire spread quickly and suddenly the boat was on fire and the passengers panic. The boatswain tried to steer the boat into shallow water; But many of the passengers jumped overboard whether they could swim or not.Despite the fact that most of them managed to land on the shallow water in the pond, a total of 37 people drowned and 20 died from burns. Of the 93 passengers on the boat, 54 died in the accident, 3 later died from their burns. This accident meant that in the future it would be banned to use gasoline engines on passenger ships.23 people were later honored for trying to save as many as possible.
