The tower was rebuilt three times and took its present form in 1650. Its height is 37 m. Around 1730, the tower, struck by lightning, burned down completely, together with 23 houses and 11 barns in the Kerkstraat.

In all towns and villages of Holland and West Friesland, a collection could be held to alleviate the need in Geervliet.

Hiking

The church of Geervliet was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The building is oriented (facing) to the east. In 1307 the church obtained from Nicolaas van Putten, Lord of Putten and Strijen, many privileges, lands, rights of dike, tithes and a chapter (college) of ten canons. Under the direction of a dean, these clergymen had the task of holding soul missions for Nicholas and his wife Aleida, as well as performing three masses daily, the high mass and the prayers of the Hours. They formed a free community within which personal property was allowed.

Hiking

In the middle of the historic town of Geervliet is the beautiful Lieve Vrouwe Kerk, a national monument from 1307. A remarkable tomb adorns the Geervliet church to this day. Built for Nicholas III and his wife Aleid van Strijen, it is not known whether they were actually buried there.
