Bourtange once had a standard grist and peel mill. This small wooden windmill stood on the Molenbastion, but lost its function when the soldiers left. The mill was sold in 1832 and moved to the hamlet of Ter Haar, where it can still be admired. Since 1980, an accurate copy of this early seventeenth-century mill has stood on the reconstructed wall in Bourtange, giving the fortress 'its' mill back. The original is the only surviving copy in the Northern Netherlands.
