The town hall in Hamburg has some curious details to offer. Magnificent sandstone columns on which portraits of famous Hamburgers can be admired, the magnificently furnished council chamber where the Senate meets every Tuesday, or the council arbor, whose windows are decorated with painted motifs from seafaring. The mayor's office is no less magnificent. This is where the head of government of the Hanseatic city receives his guests. The Phoenix Hall with the portrait of Hamburg's tutelary goddess Hammonia, who rises like a phoenix from the ashes, is reminiscent of the devastating fire of 1842. In the so-called orphan room there are artistic carvings that were used for the education of city orphans. And the large ballroom is adorned with three oversized chandeliers, each illuminated by 287 light bulbs. In the inner courtyard of the town hall, a beautifully designed fountain honors the goddess of health, Hygieia. It is intended to commemorate the cholera epidemic during the construction of Hamburg City Hall. What is particularly strange, however, is that there is an absolute ban on dancing in the large ballroom of the town hall. Why? Vibrations would be too strong, for which the architecture of the hall is not designed. The wallpaper in the various halls is also exceptional. Leather can be found on the walls in three town hall halls. Other rooms, on the other hand, are papered with silk or oiled felt. Did you know that the Senate had a painting specially repainted for the large ballroom? With the justification: »A Hanseatic citizen kneels before nobody«. Or that the striking of a clock in the hallway of the town hall reflects the interplay between life and death?
