The cross of Montigalà -Mons Aguilar- was erected in Badalona in 1913 with the aim of commemorating the moment in which Emperor Constantine proclaimed Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire in the year 313. A stone cross was built and became a symbol of identity for the city of Badalona, which at that time had 20,000 inhabitants. During the Civil War it was destroyed but a few years later, during the Franco regime, this religious symbol was raised again, this time made of reinforced concrete.
The land where the cross was erected was owned by the noble Sagarra family of Santa Coloma and the visits that the poet Josep Maria de Sagarra made to the estate could be what inspired the writer to create Vinyes Verdes vora el mar, the poem that forms part of the book that Sagarra published in 1923 Cançons de rem i de vela and that Lluís Llach would successfully set to music years later.
