As places of prayer and devotion to Mary, grottos have had a special meaning in the Catholic Church since the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes. Replicas of the much-visited memorial site of the pilgrimage site in southern France have been created in numerous parishes. There, in 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared to the peasant girl Bernadette in the Massabielle rock cave.
