Seldensate probably originated in the 14th century. The impetus was the establishment of the Gewatse farm around the year 1300, near a ford called 't Gewad' in the river Aa in Middelrode. The playhouse was built around 1440[2] as an extension of the Gewatse Hoeve. Over time, this playhouse grew into a moated castle, with a pigeon house, chapel and brewery.

The estate used to be home to a farm, a gatehouse with a pigeon tower, a beer brewery and a playhouse called Seldensate. Only the gatehouse with driveway, the pigeon tower and part of the brewery still exist. The farm has disappeared and the castle remains in ruins surrounded by a moat.
