          Many hikers and cyclists in the Stunzach Valley are drawn to the Wendelinus Chapel in Heiligenzimmern on the banks of the Stunzach. The gem invites you to rest and contemplate. This unique chapel is home to several hundred years of history. Many older fellow citizens or annual holiday guests come to the chapel to enjoy the peace and relaxation. The chapel, which was probably built in 1608, commemorates its namesake St. Wendelinus and also the Mother of God.

          It can be assumed that the front part of the chapel was originally a grotto of the Virgin Mary and later the chapel was added. For several centuries, the local rural population was dependent on their small-scale agriculture and their sparse animal husbandry. The animal plague was a serious threat to the poor living conditions of the inhabitants at that time. So it made sense to dedicate this chapel to the patron saint of cattle.

          The attentive neighbors take care of the well-kept chapel. The magnificent altar and the two saints of St. Anthony and St. Francis adorn the interior. A bell in the tower heralds the beginning of many prayers or Holy Mass in the summer months. The chapel was maintained and renovated for several centuries, the years 1843 and 1874 are noted. In recent years, it has been repeatedly repaired and cared for by some fellow citizens from Heiligenzimmer.
