It must have been hard times, back in the 14th century. Around 1350 "the black death" raged and swept away about 1/3 of the population. The administrative units sealed themselves off from one another with "Landwehr trenches". After years of work, the trenches are said to have been finished here in 1375. In the villages, the only permanent building was often a fortified tower - often the tower of a church or a fortified church. If the village was robbed and burned down, the villagers - if you were lucky - could at least save their lives and their seeds in it (see also highlights in Devese, Arnum, Lüdersen etc.)
