As early as 1398, the Palm lock was built entirely of wood as one of 15 locks along the Stecknitz Canal. It is the last remaining of its kind and therefore particularly worth seeing. The Stecknitz Canal connected the cities of Lüneburg and Lübeck and was the first watershed canal in the world. The canal was built for six years. The journey time for the kines, which are mainly loaded with salt, was about 5 weeks.

The Palm Sluice also becomes sadly famous when the Elbe is extremely flooded. Due to its low location, the area around the lock is always the first to be dangerously under water. After the last flood, mobile protective walls were built that can be set up quickly and avert the danger.

In the course of the expansion of the lock in the 17th century on the orders of George I of Great Britain, it was lined with natural stone. The coat of arms in the middle of the chamber can still be seen very clearly. It was supposed to remind of the expansion of the lock. According to tradition, it got its current name from the lock keeper Palm at the time.
